The extreme death rates (relative to anywhere else in the world save Peru) coming out of Italy and NYC/NJ always perplexed me. I assumed it was a deadlier virus that just attenuated over time, thus a lower death rate by the time Texas got its wave. But appears, in NYC, NJ and Italy anyways, more likely to be iatrogenic. Death by treatment. Death by vent.
No surprise. My cousins wife is a nurse out of Portland and went to NYC for 12 weeks in 2020 to give relief to nurses there. She came back after 6 weeks. Every time they push the vaccine on me I ask “tell me again why your wife came back early from NYC”. That usually stops the conversation. There is also a great book out from a nurse in NY called undercover epicenter nurse who talks about her experiences at the elmhurst hospital.
If you broaden the lens and look at the data in all regions of New York state what you will find is that hospital bed usage and ICU capacity were at near record lows throughout 2020.
Strange that a highly transmissible virus was evidently not transmissible enough to spread to other nearby regions.
Now I know some will say that these hospitals were telling everyone to stay away, which kept the bed/ICU usage low, as they awaited the "big wave", but certainly such a pandemic of biblical proportions would have made up for some of that, no?

I think data at the individual hospital patient level may clarify some stats that are distorted by reporting artifact at the city, state or national level. I am confused by 2 charts in today's article. In "NYC Hospitals: % Covid+ by bed type" I am not sure if the data displays the weekly % of all hospitalized Covid+ patients in either acute vs ICU beds. If this is the correct interpretation then why do the percentages not sum to 100% for each week? If the chart means instead to display the % of acute or ICU beds occupied by covid+ patients, then it clearly disagrees with the chart "NYC Hospital ICUs" which shows almost 90% of all ICU patients being Covid+ in early Spring 2020. I commend you for your perseverance searching for truth in all the questionably reported data and I share your suspicion that panic and financial incentives had the dual effect of distorting data and degrading patient care in NYC.
The 97% decline in "covid on death certificate" hospital deaths within 2 months is stunning. I'd expect that PCR tests picking up virus remnants in the non-symptomatic would prevent such a large decline.
